The revered Maa Chintpurni Temple is one of the 51 illustrious Shakti Peethas temples located in India. According to ancient mythology, it was at this very temple that Sati’s charred feet fell and are symbolized by a stone hall known as ‘Pindi’. Additionally, devotees all around the world flock to offer prayers for Goddess Durga through her popular mantra chantings which can be heard echoing throughout the premises.
The Chintpurni shakti peet is dedicated to Mata Chintpurni Devi located in a village chintpurni in District Una, Himachal Pradesh. Devotees have been visiting this Shaktipeeth for centuries to pray at the lotus feet of Mata Shri Chhinnamastika Devi and Mata Shri Chintpurni Devi.
The legendary Pandit Mai Das, a Saraswat Brahman, is believed to have initiated the renowned Chintpurni temple in Chhaproh village twenty-six generations ago. The place soon gained prominence as Mata Chintpurni Devi’s shrine and was named after her deity; and even today his descendants offer prayers and puja day by day at the famous holy site of Chintpurni.
Every year, the temple hosts a grand fair during Navratras (April and October) and “Shukalpaksh” in August. In order to preserve its beauty, devotees from all corners of India generously contributed towards renovating it over the years. As a result, this sacred place gleams with magnificence throughout many religious festivals!
On the 8th day of any fair, an adoring devotee usually presents seven pieces of betel nut (supari), one coconut (nariyal) and a red flag (dhawaja) tied together with homemade multicolored cotton yarn(mauli). Additionally, they offer ‘karah’ halwa and ‘chattar’, decorated with 84 little bells representing the 84 lacs births in different forms from which he or she seeks salvation through Goddess.
The temple doors are always open, so visitors can arrive at any time of the year. However, during winter months temperatures drop sharply below zero degrees and this is hazardous to any tourist’s health. Rainfall in the local area is especially heavy throughout monsoon season; therefore it is most recommended that one visits between April to September for a comfortable experience.
