In the beginning, Puri was not known as such; it went by the name of Charitra, according to a Chinese pilgrim. However, doubts and speculations arise when interpreting this information. When Chodaganga Deva erected a temple in honor of Lord Krishna (Puruottama Jagannath) with his brother and sister idols, the area became widely known as ‘Purushottam Kshetra’ or ‘Purushottam Puri’, which eventually evolved into simply being referred to as Puri itself over time.
