The Chota Char Dham of Uttarakhand is home to the holy Yamuna River, one of the most revered rivers in India. Situated atop a majestic peak at 3293 m above sea level, people from all walks flock here in reverent worship and supplication for divine blessings. The temple was initially constructed by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur before it was rebuilt by Maharana Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal, now enshrining an exquisite silver idol devoted to Goddess Yamuna herself.On the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, devotees flock to this sacred space in order to complete the Char Dham pilgrimage. Goddess Yamuna was born from Lord Sun and is Yama’s twin sister. This divine location serves as a reminder of their great connection and offers pilgrims an opportunity for spiritual enlightenment.
Located just 30 km away from Uttarkashi in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, Yamunotri is one of India’s most venerated pilgrimage sites and a part of the renowned Chhota Char Dham yatra. The primary focus here is the temple dedicated to Ma Yamuna – an attraction that draws countless devotees each year. Along with Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, it forms an integral part of this sacred journey through spiritual enlightenment.
A journey of 6 kilometers from Jankichatti to Yamunotri awaits travelers, taking about 2.5 hours by foot, mule or palanquin/pithoo (carrier). A full-day excursion is typically recommended for the expedition.
Every year, the divine Yamunotri Temple opens its doors to worshippers for six months. On Akshya Tritiya, an idol of Ma Yamuna is ceremoniously transported to the temple from Khushimath and returns on Bhai Dooj after a 6-month sojourn. The opening of this sacred shrine marks the commencement of all Char Dham Yatras in India. Prayer services at the temple take place from morning till evening between 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM with two daily Aartis performed at 6:30 AM and 7:30 PM respectively.
For those seeking additional spiritual experiences, Yamunotri offers Tapta Kunda, Draupadi Kunda, Surya Kunda and Divya Shila. Hindu mythology suggests that pilgrims who visit out of utmost devotion will be granted absolution from the cycle of life and death.
By flight
Although there is no direct flight connectivity to Yamunotri, the closest airport is in Dehradun at a distance of 198 km. But if you’re looking for an even more convenient option, you can opt for the helicopter service from Dehradun which will bring you directly to your destination!
By road
If you’re looking to get to Yamunotri, the nearest road stop is Uttarkashi—a 122 km trek from Janki Chatti. The journey continues on foot for 4 km if hiking is your game; however, should you prefer a less strenuous route, there are plenty of horses and palanquins available for rent!
By train
There’s no direct rail accessibility when it comes to Yamunotri, with the closest railway station located around 211 km away in Rishikesh. To reach your destination, you can take advantage of private taxis or buses instead.
