In order to gain Shakti as his daughter in the form of Sati, Lord Brahma performed a yajna with the hope of pleasing Shiva and Shakti. The great Goddess was formed from their union and helped Brahma in creating the universe; yet ultimately she was returned to her husband Shiva. Daksha later conducted multiple ceremonies, hoping for another opportunity at gaining this divine energy- all while being unaware that it would be through his own daughter’s marriage to Shiva himself! Despite his disapproval however, Sati desired to visit her father; so after some persuasion by his wife, Shiva agreed – completely oblivious of what awaited them both upon arrival. Daksha’s dishonor of Shiva was too much for Sati to bear, prompting her to take the ultimate sacrifice and immolate herself. In his fury, Shiva took on the form of Veerabhadra and destroyed Daksha’s yagna. Mourning her death, he wandered Aryavartha in despair until his rage manifested as a violent dance known as Tandava. Lord Vishu, with the aim of stopping the Tandav, used his Sudarshana Chakra, which cut through the Sati’s corpse. The parts of Sati body fell at varroas spots all through the Indian and neighboring country and these Sacred sites came to be called Shakti Peethas .
