High atop the Sahaydris mountains lived a wicked demon known as Bhima in Dakini’s forests. Treta Yuga was marked by an unexpected awakening of empathy and tenderness from within the asura, likely caused by his father Kumbhakarana’s passing at Lord Rama’s hands– resulting in a vengeful rage that could not be contained.

Ravaged by his devotion to Lord Brahma, he began engaging in the most arduous penances. His hard work and dedication didn’t go unnoticed – soon enough Lord Brahma blessed him with unimaginable powers. With these newfound abilities, chaos ensued throughout all three worlds as he wreaked havoc everywhere; from defeating Indra himself to tormenting holy men alike, Ravana ultimately followed a path of destruction that eventually led him nowhere.

Summoned by the gods, Lord Shiva arrived to help. His majestic presence instantly shifted the battle’s momentum and he soon emerged triumphant over his foe. He was then asked by the gods if he would make their land his home, so graciously accepting their invitation, Shiva took up residence in Bhima form. It is said that after this long conflict with great intensity, sweat began to pour from him forming what we now know as the Bhimarathi river.
