Considered one of the holiest sites for Hindus, Mithila Shakti Peeth is said to be where Mother Sati’s left shoulder dropped. Although there are several theories concerning its exact location, it has become known as a powerful spiritual hub with temples in three primary areas. For those seeking enlightenment or divine protection, this miraculous site offers an incredible journey and profound insights into faithfulness and devotion.
1. According to popular belief, the first place of worship is ‘Vanadurgo Temple’ located in Uchchaith at Madhubani, 15 kilometers away from Janakpur. This revered temple resides in the country of Nepal and offers a unique spiritual experience for visitors.
2. The second destination, Jeyamangala Devi Temple, is located nine kilometers from Saluna Railway Station and a 61 km road trip away from Samastipur in Bihar state of India.
3. The third place is the ‘ Ugratara temple’ situated near Saharsa station in Bihar state of India.
Mithila Shaktipeeth, located near the India-Nepal border in Darbhanga, is known to be one of the most prominent temples in Hindu mythology. In this shrine lies an idol of Goddess Uma and Lord Mahodar, making it a sacred temple amongst local worshippers.
This temple is amongst the 51 Shaktipeeths of Mother. Here, Uma and Mahadevi are worshiped as manifestations of Shakti, while Bhairav is venerated as Mahodar. According to Puranic stories, where parts of Sati’s body fell (clothing or jewelry), a sacred shrine was formed – known henceforth as Shaktipeethas. These divine locales can be found all around India!
As the myth goes, Goddess Sati ended her life by plunging into the flames of Havan initiated by her own father King Daksheshwara. When Lord Shiva was running around carrying her body on his shoulders, it is said that Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan chakra to split it in 51 parts. Amongst these pieces, one part -the left shoulder- fell at this specific location.
